Air Cleaner Element Replacement

Another very easy job to be performed every 30,000 miles, or less if you drive in dusty conditions.  As the filter is inexpensive and easy to replace, I would advise changing it at 10,000 mile intervals to maintain peak engine power.
Allow 15 minutes to complete the job.  No need to visit the dealer for a new filter, Purolator makes a perfectly-good made-in-the-USA replacement, p/n A47039.
The filter housing is located at the right-front of the engine compartment.   Loosen the hose clamp at the 1.25" diameter hose going to the air cleaner box and slide the hose off.  This tube supplies air to the "smog pump" and is only present on later production '94, and all '95 models.  This electric pump adds air (oxygen) to the exhaust on engine startup to accelerate heating of the catalytic converter.
Snap off the four clips holding the box cover to the base with a large flat blade screwdriver.  Lift the cover and remove the old filter element.
Clean accumulated loose debris out of the bottom half of the box and install the new element.  The pleated paper side goes downwards.  Take care that the soft rubber surround fits properly in the groove.  Replace the cover centrally over the base and snap the clips back in place.  Re-attach the smog pump tube, if applicable.
