Problem Areas (I believe these items are covered by service bulletins)
Leaking cam and timing cover gaskets
Failure of throttle / cruise control cable end fittings
Loose screws on oil pan
'95 models only:
Excessive emissions due to long-term deposits on oxygen sensor.
DME EPROM replaced.
Other Misc Potential Problems on the 530i
 
In the event battery is overfilled or boils, vent tube sprays acid on right-side
dog bone (trailing arm connecting link) damaging the plastic seals.
Power steering and A/C hoses are poorly shielded from exhaust system
radiated heat. Clamps may loosen with age allowing leaks.

on the M60 - underneath, near transmission
Crankshaft Position
Sensor - front of engine
Drive Belt Tensioner - there
are two of these, adjust for maximum tension
Auxiliary Cooling Fan Relay Box - left wheelwell
Lightweight Stainless Steel
Exhaust Headers - not "equal length headers" of hotrod fame, but a
high-capacity system non-the-less for only three liters.
Brake Pad Wear Sensor -
right-rear shown.
Vehicle Speed Sensor on differential housing.
