Adjusting the Front Toe-in
General
The front toe-in is the only alignment setting which requires occasional checking on a
maintenance basis. The "toe-in" is the angle between the front wheel axes
when the steering is pointed roughly straight ahead. You might expect this to be
zero but in fact they are pointed together at the leading edge of the tires by a very
small angle. The purpose of this is solely to induce a small amount of tire scrub
which enhances straight-line stability and steering precision. Suspension wear and
deformation by rough roads over time eventually causes the toe-in to drift out of spec.
Incorrect toe-in will cause rapid tire wear (feathering) at the outer edges.
You should get the dealer to do this adjustment. Despite my best
efforts I seem to be unable to achieve the correct toe-in with my home-made
tools.
